Glow star Alison Brie appeared on the E! Network’s Screen Actors Guild Awards pre-show, and while chatting with host Giuliana Rancic about the Time’s Up movement, the conversation shifted to the subject of James Franco’s sexual misconduct allegations. Rancic asked Brie how the allegations against her brother-in-law have affected their family. Seemingly caught off guard by the question, the actress paused before giving her answer.
Brie, who is married to James’ brother, Dave Franco, echoed the answer The Disaster Artist star gave to Stephen Colbert last week on The Late Show when he said the accusations on Twitter were not accurate, but those who feel victimized should come forward and speak out.
Franco did not walk the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but cameras did spot him in the audience during the show. He did not win the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, losing to Gary Oldman and his performance in The Darkest Hour.
The 39-year-old skipped the Critic’s Choice Awards last week – where he won the Best Actor award – amid reports that he was frustrated by the allegations made against him.
Everything started during the Golden Globes earlier this month when Franco wore a pin supporting the Times Up movement and victims of sexual harassment. This prompted several of his former acting students to accuse him on social media of sexual misconduct.
A few days later, The Los Angeles Times published a story where five women claimed the actor had behaved inappropriately with them.
The entertainment industry is currently in the middle of awards season, with everything leading up to the Oscars on March 4th, and now some are wondering if the allegations against Franco will hurt his chances at getting a nomination, much less a win.
The eight-day voting period for nominations ended on January 12th, just one day after the LA Times published its article, so there is a good possibility he had enough votes to be nominated for the Best Actor category before the story landed.
The story didn’t come in time to stop a possible nomination, but when it comes to his chances of winning the coveted trophy, the allegations could be extremely damaging.
Last year, amid two sexual harassment lawsuits, Casey Affleck won the award for his role in Manchester By the Sea. Affleck denied the allegations against him, but he did settle both cases out of court for an undisclosed amount of money.
This year the climate is different, so James Franco may not be able to get a win like Affleck, but fans will just have to wait to find out if the claims made against him will squash his chances at Oscar glory. Alison Brie and the cast of Glow also went home empty-handed.
