Alfonso Ribeiro, who formerly portrayed the character, Carlton Banks, on the 90’s television show, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, alongside Will Smith at the start of his career, said he has no intentions of reviving his character, ever. Unfortunately for his long-time fans, Alfonso revealed he wouldn’t perform the signature dance moves.
During a chat with reporters from Us Weekly, Alfonso said a reunion for many reasons would not happen. The 46-year-old star of Dancing With The Stars announced “acting was my love,” but he spent many years trying to convince people he wasn’t Carlton Banks.
Alfonso said the tragedy of taking a role like Carlton Banks is that people forever remember you as that character, and no one else. He said when you work with writers and directors to create a seemingly real person; then the audiences punish him for it.
In a nutshell, Ribeiro revealed that Carlton Banks essentially ruined his career, which happens to many performers due to movies and TV shows. Take, for example, Mark Hamill, who is forever remembered as Luke Skywalker and no one else.
Additionally, the same thing happened to Carrie Fisher, who rarely had starring roles after her Princess Leia character. In fact, one of the only performers from Star Wars to have a solid career in movies afterward was Harrison Ford.
However, Mark was able to create a reputation for himself as one of the best voice artists of all time, especially with his character, The Joker, in the Batman Animated Series.
As for Alfonso, he said, “I did something so well that you’re punishing me for doing it.” Ribeiro claimed, the idea of doing that character again would “rehash old wounds.” It brought him a ton of “greatness in his life” but also a lot of pain. He claimed he wants to continue to look forward, rather than backward.
