Brazilian supermodel, Adriana Lima, revealed on Instagram on the 9th of December that she won’t be taking her clothes off anymore unless it’s for a more meaningful purpose. The model used the phrase, “empty cause,” while referring to her past exploits as a brand ambassador for Victoria’s Secret.
The 36-year-old Victoria’s Secret model wrote that she had “received a call for the possibility of filming a sexy video” which will be shared on social media.
After modeling almost her entire adult life, Lima decided she will turn her back on the industry which afforded her so much, for the purposes of refusing to perpetuate beauty standards.
Lima wrote, “I realized that majority of women probably wake up every morning trying to fit a stereotype” imposed by social media, the fashion industry, and the culture, in general.
The model stated she would not “take off (her) clothes anymore for an empty cause” and wants to support women more in the future.
?I had received a call for the possibility of filming a sexy video of me to be posted and shared in social media. Even though I have done many of this type, something had changed in me, when a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body, then it made me think…. that everyday in my life, I wake up thinking, how do I look? Was I going to be accepted in my job? And in that moment I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/socialmedia/fashion etc imposed…. i thought that’s not a way of living and beyond that…. that’s not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change….. I will not take of my clothes anymore for a empty cause…..?✨ #Embraceyouself #natureisbeautiful #naturalissexy #LOVEYOU ?✨
And while the 36-year-old conceded that her job contributes to the upholding of a particular image which women aspire to be, Adriana stated she is sick of these impositions. She said it’s “not healthy for society” to force women to look a particular way.
However, not everyone had her back, with many people on social media saying it’s incredibly convenient for her to profit on her body while she’s young and beautiful, but now that she’s close to retiring, it’s better for her to turn her back on modeling.
One person wrote, “what a hypocrite!” and claimed that if she’s ready to make a change, she should contribute all of the millions of dollars she has made over the years and donate it to charity.
