With all the #OscarsSoWhite scandal and other movies that have been excessively promoted, there are still some other pretty valuable productions that might have escaped you. We made a top of some really good black movies you should see if you haven’t already, except for The Birth of a Nation. The latter one was released in January and it earned an impressive distribution deal of $17.5 million.
- Hidden Figures. This will be launched in January 2017 and it will feature Kevin Costner, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Mahershala Ali and others. It tell the story of a black female mathematician who helped the USA and NASA to win the space race back in the 60s.
- Collateral Beauty. The movie will be available on December 16 and it stars Will Smith, Ed Norton, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren and Naomie Harris, among others. Will Smith is an ad executive who has to accept the death of his daughter.
3. Fences. This one will also be launched in December and it has in the center Viola Davis and Denzel Washington. They play the roles they have previously played in 2010 on Broadway when they revived the play written by August Wilson. Washington is a former baseball player who has to take of his family in Pittsburgh in the 1950s.
4. Queen of Katwe. The new movie which will be released this week is showing Lupita Nyong’O and David Oyelowo. It is directed by Mira Nair, the same woman who worked on Mississippi Masala and it shows Phiona Mutesi, played by Madina Nalwanga, who is a chess prodigy from Uganda trying to become an international champion. Her goal is to help herself and her mother (played by Nyong’o) to escape poverty. Oyelowo is a missionary who becomes Phiona’s mentor after he notices her potential.
